While I was studying business at university, my stepmother passed away from cancer. It was a devastating loss for my family. At the same time, it was an inspiration for me: not only did it serve as a valuable reminder of how short life is, it also motivated me to be part of the solution to a growing epidemic. A major cause of the increased cancer rates we’re seeing today is the unhealthy lifestyle many of us are leading. Fast food, junk food, and processed foods are a big part of the problem.
When I looked around my campus and the nearby businesses where I could eat on my lunch breaks, I noticed a big void: where was the healthy option for busy people? I wanted to buy something nutritious that would be fast and easy. This led me to research various business ideas that could fulfill my own need, and the needs of my community.
Booster Juice is Canada’s largest chain selling smoothies and fresh juice, and it appealed to me because it uses whole foods to create delicious drinks, wraps and snacks. I opened a franchise while I was still in school, and chose to run my store with my own unique values and vision leading the way. A year later, it had become one of the top ten highest grossing stores in Canada. I opened two more locations, was named “Rookie of the Year” by Booster Juice, and named “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” by my local Chamber of Commerce in Kamloops, BC. The Booster Juice head office hired me to help train staff at the first Booster Juice location in India in 2008.
I recently sold my locations. It was always my plan to create amazing businesses that could take on a life of their own without me, providing wonderful opportunities for other people to step in and run the show. I still own the busiest location in BC, and my dedicated staff there allow me to step back and work on other projects now. So, onto the next challenges! I’m currently writing a book, and developing plans for a brand new business, which will be completely different. I’ll share more details as soon as I can
